SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association announced release of its revised and expanded Sustainability Charter. The new Charter reflects the steel industry’s increasing focus on sustainability and the evolving business environment.
The Charter outlines an action-oriented approach towards sustainability, by strongly encouraging global steel producers and associations to proactively engage in various sustainability programmes by the Association, thereby pushing themselves forward in their journey to sustainability.

It comprises 9 principles with 20 associated criteria, covering environmental, social, governance and economic aspects of sustainability. A total of 39 worldsteel members have already signed the Charter, thus aligning fully with all the criteria. These members have been recognized by the Association as Charter Members for a period of three years. Meantime, worldsteel said that any of its members, new or existing, can apply to be a Charter Member at any point of time.
Commenting on the Charter, Edwin Basson, Director General, worldsteel, said that the release reaffirms the steel industry’s commitment to sustainability and demonstrates its enhanced efforts and aligned actions towards a sustainable society. Sustainability is an integral part of the steel industry, he added.
