World Crude Steel Output Dipped in January

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The world crude steel production by 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) totalled 155.0 million tonnes (Mt) in the month of January this year, down modestly by 6.10% compared to the same month a year before.

The largest steel producing region was the Asia and Oceania, whose output totalled 111.70 Mt in the opening month of the current year. The second largest producer was the EU-27 region, with an output of 11.50 Mt. In third place was North America, which recorded an output of 10.0 Mt. The output (in Mt) by the other regions is as follows: Africa (1.2), CIS (9.0), Other Europe (4.1), Middle East (3.9) and South America (3.7).

The Middle East output surged the most, rising by 16.1% from the prior year month. The North American region recorded year-on-year surge in output by 2.5%. The monthly output by the EU-27 and South American regions were down by 6.80% and 3.30% respectively. Other Europe too saw modest dip in output by 4.7%.

Meantime, the CIS region saw its output increase marginally by 2.10% over the previous year. On the contrary, the Asia and Oceania region recorded notable year-on-year dip in output by 8.20%.

The topmost steel producing country was China, with an output of 81.70 Mt in January 2021. The other key steel producing countries were India (10.80 Mt) and Japan (7.80 Mt).
