Rio Tinto Leads New Venture to Boost Sustainable Aluminum Can Output

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): London-based Rio Tinto has entered into an agreement with Belgium-based beer and beverages producer Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) to boost production of sustainable aluminum cans. The collaboration will initially focus on North America, which will be extended to global level.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between both the parties commits to work in tandem with supply chain partners to promote AB InBev products in markets. AB InBev will use low-carbon aluminum from Rio Tinto to make sustainable cans. The partnership will reduce carbon emissions by more than 30%, as compared with traditional manufacturing techniques that are currently used.

The first one million cans produced through the partnership using low carbon aluminum smelting technology will be piloted in the U.S.

Jean-Sébastien Jacques, CEO, Rio Tinto noted that the partnership with AB InBev reflects the great work of its commercial team. Furthermore, it is a major step toward reducing the carbon emissions in its packaging supply chain. Ingrid De Ryck, vice president of procurement and sustainability, North America at AB InBev said that the partnership will bring meaningful change for the environment.
