SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Global beverages giant PepsiCo Inc. announced its commitment to reduce use of virgin non-renewable plastic across its brands by as much as 20% over the next nine years. The plastic reduction target was announced consequent to the company reaching an agreement with ‘As You Sow’- a non-profit that aims to create lasting change that benefits people and planet.
The commitment means that PepsiCo would cut the use of virgin, non-renewable plastic in its products by around 460,000 tons by 2030. It aims to expand its SodaStream business that promotes consumers to make beverages at home. This in turn could eliminate the use of nearly 200 billion plastic bottles by 2030.

Several other large companies including Keurig Dr Pepper, Mondelez International, Target Corp., and Walmart Inc., too had agreed to plastic reduction targets earlier this year, that too with 2025 deadline. Though ‘As You Sow’is pleased that PepsiCo has agreed to reduce plasticuse by one-fifth, it is quite concerned that it has a five year longer time period to achieve it, said Conrad Mackerron, Senior Vice President, As You Sow.
It must be noted that PepsioCo was ranked as one among the world’s worst plastic polluters in the 2020 report published by the non-profit.
