SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Deerfield Beach, Florida-based Ocean Recovery Group (ORG) announced new initiative aimed at tackling ocean-bound plastic waste in the Caribbean. The initiative will fund recycling infrastructure to treat these plastics in the Dominican Republic.
The ORG recycling facility located in La Vega commenced its operations in February this year. The facility targets to collect, recycle and neutralize approximately 12,000 tons of ocean-bound plastics before the end of the current year.

The Dominican Republic has been lacking adequate recycling infrastructure and efficient waste-management systems. As a result, it has turned out to become one of the major contributors of ocean plastic pollution. As per estimates, the country recycled only less than 8% of its total plastic waste.
The ORG La Vega facility houses state-of-the-art plastic waste processing technology and equipment. The integration recycling process at the plant separates and bales cardboard and other paper-grade recyclables in addition to various plastic categories including PET, HDPE, LDPE and PP. The facility collaborates with both formal and informal waste collectors to gather plastic waste from the island’s beaches, riverways and other areas.
Reportedly, ORG is in talks with several Fortune 500 brands and is hopeful of announcing some major partnerships this summer.
