The Malaysian plastics recycling major Heng Hiap Industries Sdn Bhd (HHI) has been collaborating with SABIC to create certified circular polymers produced through the advanced recycling of ocean-bound plastics. The collaboration has not only upscaled the production of more sustainable materials, but also helped in safeguarding the oceans and waterways from plastic waste, which in turn poses danger to human and marine life.
The plastic waste management industry in the country has faced unprecedented challenges over the past two years.
As per rough estimates published in 2020, around 370,000 tonnes of plastic waste from Malaysia enter the world’s oceans every year. The country is one of the leading plastic waste generators in South-East Asian region.
