SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Virginia-headquartered Musser Lumber Company announced its decision to invest towards expansion of its sawmill in Wythe County. The proposed $2.4 million investment is expected to create as many as 12 new jobs in the region.
The expansion comprises of addition of new production and drying capacity for sawdust and wood shavings. This could result in additional purchases of forest products worth nearly $8.5 million over the next three years. Furthermore, the investment is aimed at boosting its production and sale of materials to its customers including decking manufacturers, plastic extrusion companies and wood pellet producers.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has approved a grant of $75,000 from the Governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development (AFID) Fund to assist Wythe County with the project. In addition, the company will also obtain funding and assistance for employee training activities through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.
Ed Musser, vice president of Musser Lumber Co. acknowledged the support it received from the Commonwealth of Virginia, Wythe County, and the Joint Industrial Development Authority. Meantime, Governor Ralph Natham said that he is grateful to the family-owned business for their investment in rural communities. The company’s continued growth and success in the region is a testament to the strength of Virginia’s forestry industry, he added.
