SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): LIBERTY Steel marked another important milestone in its journey to low-carbon green steel production by announcing the closure of coke ovens and transformation towards hydrogen-DRI and EAF technology. The historic final push marking the end of onsite production of coke from metallurgical coal was held on 15th September, 2023.

To mark the occasion, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese toured the company’s Whyalla Steelworks. He was accompanied by South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas and top officials of the company.
Sanjeev Gupta, Executive Chairman, LIBERTY Steel stated that the company is very proud to have been provided with an opportunity to work with forward-thinking governments on carbon-reduction efforts. He expressed gratitude to the Federal and South Australian governments for their support and encouragement and look forward to partner with them in the future as well, Gupta added.
Gupta acknowledged the efforts and incredible contributions of coke ovens’ highly-skilled workforce. It must be noted that all of the coke ovens workforce have decided to continue with the business in alternative roles.
The company will import coke for use in the blast furnace until the EAF comes online.
