SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): LIBERTY Steel Group has formed a partnership with China-based CISDI Engineering Co. towards advancing decarbonisation efforts at the Dunaferr steel works. The partnership will be run in collaboration with the Hungarian Ministry of Economic Development. An MoU to this effect was signed in Budapest, in the presence of top officials from all the three entities.
The technical aspects of the project will be taken care of by LIBERTY and CISDI, whereas the Hungarian Ministry of Economic Development’s administrative processes will boost the project’s delivery.
As per plan, Dunaffer steel plant will shift from coal-based steelmaking to electric arc furnace (EAF) technology, which in turn will enhance the competitiveness of the operation and help to reduce the direct carbon dioxide emissions from the plant by approximately 80%. The project, which proposes to install CISDI’s new 150t capacity EAF, is subject to EU regulatory approval.
Sanjeev Gupta, Executive Chairman, LIBERTY said that the partnership will ensure that the Dunaújváros steelworks is put on a sustainable competitive pathway as quickly as possible by transitioning to lower carbon technologies.
