SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hydro Aluminum Metal announced plans to construct a new extrusion ingot recycling plant in the U.S. The company has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) towards acquisition of land in Cassopolis, Michigan. The products from the plant will mainly be used in critical automotive applications. The final investment decision will be made before the end of the current year.
As per the LoI with the landowner Midwest Energy and Communications (MEC), the proposed facility will become operational by 2023. It is expected to have a production capacity of nearly 120,000 metric tonnes per year, offering around 70 direct jobs. The company plans to invest approximately $120 million into the project, said the company press release.
The proposed recycling plant marks the entry of the company into large scale production of Hydro CIRCULAR extrusion ingot in North America. The product boasts of at least 75% post-consumer scrap content and is claimed to have a market-leading carbon footprint. The plant will make use of the same technology employed at Hydro’s facilities elsewhere in Luxembourg and Spain.
The facility’s direct access to rail services is expected to result in overall reduction of carbon footprint of its operations.
