SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Coca-Cola announced that its 500 ml sparkling beverage bottle portfolio sold in Canada will be made out of 100% recycled plastic by early next year. The new recycled bottles will be manufactured by Coke Canada Bottling across its plants in the country.
Apart from caps and labels, the bottles will be free from virgin PET plastic. The bottles will contain “Recycle Again” label, thus encouraging users to recycle them after use. Upon collection of the used bottles, they will be cleaned, sorted and ground into raw materials, which in turn will be used in the manufacture of new plastic bottles.
Commenting on the development, Kurt Ritter, vice president and general manager of sustainability for Coca-Cola North America said that the transitioning of its 500 ml sparkling beverage bottle portfolio to 100% recycled plastic will boost the availability of high-quality, food-grade, recycled plastic available in Canada. Furthermore, it will help the company to offer more of its brands in a sustainable format, he added.
Coca-Cola aims to make all of its packaging recyclable by 2025, use 50% recycled materials for packaging by 2030 and have at least one-fourth of its beverages to be sold in refillable or returnable packaging by 2030.
The company has been taking several steps in reducing its plastic footprints over the past several years.
