SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Coca-Cola has partnered with its bottling partner Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company (HBC) to launch 100% recycled plastic bottles across its soft drinks portfolio in Ireland and Northern Ireland. This company had previously launched 100% rPET bottles in India and the Philippines.

The launch is considered part of efforts by the company to gear up towards the upcoming Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) for plastic bottles in the Republic of Ireland early next year, said Davide Franzetti, general manager at Coca-Cola HBC Ireland and Northern Ireland. The shift will help to eliminate approximately 7,100 tons of virgin plastics from circulation every year. Furthermore, it will help the company to ensure that all of its used bottles are recovered, recycled and reused repeatedly.
Coca-Cola has been in efforts to reduce its packaging footprint and create a circular economy for plastic bottles and cans in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Earlier in 2021, it had invested approximately $13.7 million in the HBC plant at Knockmore Hill, Lisburn. In addition, it had invested nearly $1.06 million in various packaging innovations at the facility.
The move to 100% recycled plastic across its soft drinks range in Ireland and Northern Ireland marks an important milestone in the company’s sustainability journey.
