SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau, 2.129 million net tons of steel were imported overall in September of this year. The finished steel product with the biggest rise in import volumes in September of this year was mechanical tubings, which saw a roughly 15% increase over the previous month. The 12-month period from October 2023 to September 2024 showed a 0.4% increase in overall steel imports and a 0.5% decrease in completed steel imports. According to the AISI report, the market share of imported finished steel was estimated to be 23% for the first nine months of this year.

When comparing the 12-month period from October 2023 to September 2024 to the preceding 12-month period, the products with notable year-to-date increases were sheets and strip all other metallic coated and sheets and strip hot dipped galvanized, whose imports increased by 53% and 31%, respectively. Additionally, imports of wire rod rose by 31%.
