SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Kappa announced investment of $23.5 million in upgrading its Nuevo Laredo sheet plant in the Tamaulipas region in Northeastern Mexico so as to make it a fully integrated corrugated plant. According to company press release, the investment will extend the building and installation of a state-of-the-art corrugator. The new machine is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions significantly by almost 40% and result in two-fold surge in production capacity. The boosted capacity will streamline the company’s operations in San Antonio, Texas. The anticipated reduction in carbon emissions is mainly on account of less transportation between the company’s Nuevo Laredo and San Antonio plants.
Laurent Sellier, CEO of Smurfit Kappa the Americas noted that the investment reinforces its commitment to being an important player in the growth of the Mexican market. Also, it will further strengthen the company’s partnerships within the sectors that drive the local economy in the Nuevo Laredo region, he added.
The enhanced production capacity will help the company to meet the needs of current and indeed potential customers in the region.
