‘No Plastic Bag’ Campaign to Expand to More States

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): More states in Malaysia seem to be endorsing the ‘no plastic bag’ campaign, aimed at protecting the country from the harmful impacts of rising plastic pollution. The campaign, already underway in Penang, Selangor and Johor, is being implemented in other states as well.

According to the statement released by Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, Environment and Water Minister, the ministry has obtained the mandate to implement a pollution charge on plastic bags from various states during the recently concluded 76th National Council meeting.

The recently held meeting between Environment Ministers and Members of the State Executive Council Responsible for the Environment (Mexcoe) has decided to continue the implementation of the campaign, aimed at reducing plastic pollution in Malaysia. Several new states have expressed willingness to start implementing the campaign, staring with the initial phase of consumer awareness.

The meeting also reached an agreement on the need to strengthen cooperation between the federal and state governments in order to ensure right balance between developmental activities and preservation of environment from pollution.
