SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to Vietnam News Agency, the country will ban the use of all single-use plastic bags, including those in wet markets, starting 2030. Also, the country has decided to set a target to use 100% environment-friendly bags at commercial centers and supermarkets by 2025.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE), in partnership with the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment (ISPONRE) and Hanoi's Department of Industry and Trade (DoIT) has called upon enterprises to sign up to the commitment in connection with plastic waste reduction. It must be noted that a recent survey had indicated that approximately 38 million single-use plastic bags are used at supermarkets every year.
The collaboration has already enrolled 16 major retailers and has beefed up awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging and creating favourable conditions for residents to replace plastic bags with eco-friendly alternatives.
The stated goals include reduction of volume of plastic waste dumped into the oceans by 50% and elimination of plastic waste from tourism complexes, hotels and other lodging facilities by 2025.
