City Council Ratified Ban on Single-Use Plastic Items

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Guelph City Council, in its meeting held Monday evening, approved the proposed ban on some of the harmful single-use plastic items, which will come into effect on 1 January, 2023. The Council also intends to impose a fee on disposable coffee cups and reusable shopping bags with effect from 2024.

The recommendations approved by the Council comprise a ban on plastic bags and Styrofoam containers. In addition, it plans to include plastic straws ahead of formal consideration of ban bylaw in the month of September this year. As per initial plans, plastic straw was also to be included in the ban. However, it was recommended to be removed in order to allow for further consultations with the City’s Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC).

The Council also gave approval to add a 25 cent fee on disposable coffee cups and $1 for reusable shopping bags effective March 2024. The businesses will have the right to decide what they want to do with the collected fee. The matter will undergo a public round of consultations and come up again before the Council.

Meantime, the proposal to up the coffee cup fee to $1 was turned down by the Council. The amendment proposal by Councilor Mark MacKinnon was rejected by an 8-5 vote.
