AISI: U.S. Steel Shipments Declined in Early-2022

The report provides year-on-year comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products during the first month of the current year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests marginal decline in steel shipments during the month of January this year compared with the prior month. On the other hand, the shipments registered modest surge over the same month a year before.

According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 7.758 million net tons in January 2022. This is modestly higher by 4.5% from the shipments of 7.421 million net tons in the same month a year before. The shipments during the month recorded marginal decline by 1.4% from the previous month. It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 7.872 million net tons in the month of December 2021.

The report provides year-on-year comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products during the first month of the current year. The shipments of corrosion-resistant sheet and strip in January 2022 have surged higher marginally by 1% from January 2021. The shipments of cold rolled sheet dipped heavily by 7%, whereas those of hot rolled sheet recorded 1% year-on-year surge, AISI noted.

Also, during the most recent week, the U.S. weekly raw steel output recorded marginal increase by 0.40%. The weekly domestic raw steel output totalled 1.762 million net tons (NT), at a domestic mill capability utilization rate of 80.0%.

Meantime, the steel import permit applications totalled 2.274 net tons in February, falling significantly by 24.5% from permit tons recorded in January this year.
