SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest statistics published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) indicates that full-year imports of hot rolled sheets surged most during 2021. The imports totalled 3.056 million net tons of hot rolled sheets, higher by almost 89% when compared with 1.621 million net tons imported in 2020. However, the monthly imports slumped by over 10% to 289,973 net tons in December last year.
The other steel mill product to witness notable surge in imports was sheets and strip all other metallic coatings, which recorded year-on-year surge by 69%. The yearly imports totalled 1.147 million net tons in 2021, as compared with 679,708 net tons in 2020. Meantime, the imports of oil country goods surged higher by 67.3% year-on-year from 1.102 million net tons to 1.843 million net tons.

During the previous year, the largest volumes of steel imports were from Canada. The imports from the country were up by 34% to total 6.970 million net tons. In second and third place were Mexico and Brazil, which supplied 4.760 million net tons and 4.365 million net tons of steel to the U.S in 2021.
The total steel imports by the U.S stood at 31.476 million net tons during the previous year. Out of this, 22.771 million net tons were finished steel products. The total and finished steel imports during the year were up by 43% and 41% respectively.
