DS Smith Teams Up with ECOWipes to Chop Carbon Emissions
Accordingly, changes were proposed to the bottom as well as lid.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): DS Smith announced implementation of a collaborative approach with EcoWipes- a leading manufacturer of nonwovens. The combined effort to optimize shelf ready packaging (SRP) resulted in reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 10% and cost savings by 30% in the entire supply chain.
Initially, DS Smith carried out a customer’s production line audit, which identified opportunities for savings by optimizing glued packaging with a full bottom and a very strong lid. Accordingly, changes were proposed to the bottom as well as lid.
In the bottom, it recommended shortening of one of the flaps, which until then had the width of the entire bottom. This change resulted in reduction of consumption of raw materials by 18% from 0.48 m2 to 0.39 m2. Also, DS Smith proposed changes to the existing lid which glued to the full height by changing it to a U-type lid. This resulted in reduction of raw material consumption from 0.37 m2 to 0.15 m2. Thus the implemented solutions led to notable savings in the entire supply chain.
Commenting on the collaboration, Artur Brodzik, Area Sales Manager, DS Smith noted that the example proved that joint search and innovative approach with suppliers would bring measurable results.
