SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) has published the list of top 10 steel producing nations during the previous year.
China topped the list of world’s leading steel producers. The Chinese annual crude steel output remained more or less flat upon comparison with 2022. The country’s crude steel output totalled 1,019.1 Mt during the previous year. The output during the last month of the year totalled 67.4 Mt, down significantly by 14.9% over December 2022.

India’s estimated output, at 140.2 Mt, recorded significant surge by 11.8% over the prior year. The country produced 12.1 Mt of steel during December 2023, thus becoming the country to record highest production growth year-on-year. The Japanese output edged lower by 2.5% during the year to total 87.0 Mt, while its December 2023 output witnessed marginal increase by 1.1% to total 7.0 Mt.
The U.S. produced 80.7 Mt of steel, slightly higher by 0.2% year-on-year. Russia is estimated to have produced 75.8 Mt, notably higher by 5.6% year-on-year. The output by other countries in the top ten list in Mt is as follows: South Korea (66.7), Germany (35.4), Turkiye (33.7), Brazil (31.9) and Iran (31.1).
Among the top ten steel producing nations, Brazil recorded sharpest decline in steel output during the year, falling significantly by more than 6.5% year-on-year.
