U.S. Raw Steel Output Dipped by One-Third, Says AISI

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The weekly statistics published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) denotes substantial decline in raw steel output in the latest week ending on April 18, 2020.

The weekly raw steel production totalled 1.277 million net tons at a capability utilization rate of 57.0%. This compares with the production of 1.892 million net tons in the week ending April 18, 2019 at a capability utilization rate of 81.3%. Year-on-year, the production recorded substantial decline by 32.5%. On the contrary, the production was up marginally by 1.7% from the prior week, when production had totalled 1.256 million net tons at a capability utilization rate of 56.1%, AISI reported.

The production by Southern region topped 539,000 net tons, closely followed by Great Lakes, whose production totalled 443,000 net tons. Midwest and North East production totalled 124,000 net tons and 116,000 net tons respectively. Meantime, Western region accounted for 55,000 net tons of crude steel production.

The adjusted cumulative year-to-date production through April 18, 2020 was 27.60 million net tons. This is modestly down by 6.6% from the corresponding year-to-date period in 2019. The year-to-date production until April 18, 2019 had totalled 29.557 million net tons.
