Shipments by U.S. Steel Mills Dipped 9%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The steel shipments by the U.S. mills during February this year reported notable decline from the prior month. However, the shipments were up marginally when compared with the same month a year before. This is with reference to the latest trade statistics published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

The steel shipments by the U.S. mills totalled 7.772 million net tons during the month of February 2020. This is down substantially by 9% from the prior month. The shipments had totalled 8.536 million net tons during January 2020. When compared with the same month a year before, the shipments recorded marginal increase by 0.4%. It must be noted that the U.S. steel mills had shipped 7.774 million net tons of steel in February last year.

The AISI report also provides comparison of February 2020 shipments of specific products with the prior month. Upon comparison with January this year, the shipments of cold rolled sheets recorded notable decline by 6%. The other product to witness notable dip in shipment volume was hot rolled sheets, whose volumes were down by 5%. Meantime, shipments of hot dipped galvanized sheet and strip witnessed 4% decline from the prior month.

According to AISI data, the year-to-date steel shipments totalled 16.307 million net tons in 2020. This is marginally higher by 3.1% when matched with the corresponding period in 2019. The shipments had totalled 15.824 million net tons during the initial two months of the previous year.
