SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The weekly domestic raw steel production data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) signalled significant surge in output during the week ended October 23, 2021. The weekly production climbed higher significantly by 20.7% over previous year.
The raw steel output by the U.S. mills totalled 1.549 million net tons (NT) at a capability utilization rate of 84.7%. The production had totalled only 1.549 million NT at a capacity utilization rate of 70.1% during the same period a year before. On the contrary, the production during the week recorded marginal decline by 0.6% when compared with the production of 1.882 million NT at a capability utilization rate of 85.3% during the prior week, AISI data said.

The adjusted year-to-date raw steel production totalled 77.019 million NT until the week ending October 23, 2021. The mills in the country reported capability utilization rate of 81.3% during this period. The production till date has increased by 20.3% from 64.029 million NT during the same period last year. The capability utilization rates were up from 67.1% a year before.
The mills in the Southern region accounted for approximately 42% of the total weekly raw steel production by the country. The regional output totalled 782,000 NT. The production (in thousand net tons) by the other regions was as follows: North East-176, Midwest-201, Great Lakes-635 and Western-76.
