AISI Signalled Notable Surge in Steel Import Permits

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which signals notable increase in steel import permit applications in the month of September this year.

Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.865 million net tons in April 2021. This is significantly higher by approximately 8.8% when matched with 2.633 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with August 2021 final imports of 2.773 million net tons, the September 2021 steel import permit tonnage was up by 3.3%, AISI data said.

In September this year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 2.144 million net tons, marginally up by 1.7% from the final imports total of 2.108 million net tons in August this year.

Line pipes reported largest increase in August permits over the prior month, surging higher by 107%. The import permits for oil country goods and reinforcing bars were up by 94% and 73% respectively.

In April 2021, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for South Korea. The largest offshore suppliers through the first nine months of the current year were South Korea, Japan and Turkey.

The total and finished steel imports during the first nine months of the year totalled 23.434 million net tons and 16.358 million net tons respectively. The product to witness highest year-to-date increase over the corresponding period in 2020 was hot rolled sheets, which recorded 93% surge.
