SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Tearfund- the UK-based non-profit organization has blamed four bottling majors for majority of the world’s plastic pollution.
According to them, plastics from Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestle and Unilever create more than half-a-million tonnes of plastic pollution every year. This is based on study conducted on plastic put into the market in China, India, the Philippines, Brazil, Mexico and Nigeria in order to analyze the impacts of single-use plastics in developing countries.

The study found that burning of plastics put into these markets resulted in creation of 4.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. It concluded that the sachets, bottles and cartons from these companies are often dumped or burned, thus contributing to climate crisis as well. Surprisingly, these companies do not make any mention of emissions in their climate change commitments.
Coca-Cola is the biggest contributor of pollution, creating 200,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year, followed by PepsiCo with 137,000 tonnes, Nestle with 95,000 tonnes and Unilever with 70,000 tonnes.
Tearfund urged the companies to immediately switch to reusable packaging in place of sachets and single-use plastic bottles. The production and supply of single-use plastic products must be reduced to half from current levels, in every country, by 2025.
