SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A total of 10 companies have been held responsible by a lawsuit for causing much of the world’s plastic pollution. The companies include Coca Cola, Pepsi and Nestle among others.
According to the lawsuit filed by Earth Island Institute- a Californian environmental group, the companies are responsible not only for creating plastic pollution nuisance but also misleading consumers on recyclability of plastic in their products. A significant amount of plastic entering the Earth’s oceans comes from a handful of companies. The ten companies mentioned in the lawsuit are Coca Cola, Pepsi, Nestle, Clorox, Crystal Geyser, Mars, Danone, Mondelez International, Colgate-Palmolive, and Procter & Gamble.
The lawsuit seeks to ensure that the companies bear the costs of remediating the harm caused by plastic pollution. It also demands to stop these companies from advertising their products as recyclable, when a large majority of them are not so.
David Phillips, executive director of Earth Island Institute urged that the companies should be held responsible for choking the ecosystem with plastic. The companies should take more responsibility for the waste created by their products, Phillips added.
