Tata Steel to Launch Mini Steel Recycling Plants

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Tata Steel announced plans to set up mini steel recycling plants in different parts of the country over the next few months. It must be noted that the company had commissioned its first such recycling plant in Rohtak, Haryana last year in partnership with Arti Green Tech.

According to TV Narendran, Managing Director and CEO, Tata Steel, the company plans to set up 500,000—800,000 tonne steel plant in the forthcoming months, which will process and convert scrap steel into reinforced steel. The proposed new facilities will process left-over metals after scrapping automobiles, such as the body shell to make recycled steel. The plants will use mechanized equipment to process the scrap, which will then be supplied for downstream steel making, Narendran added.

The plants could be set up in much smaller area of around 50-100 acres, in comparison with conventional steel plants that require minimum area of nearly 3,000 acres. Tata Steel intends to set up one scrapped steel facility in the South and another in the West.

The company has not disclosed the investment required for establishing such plants. However, rough industry estimates suggest that a plant of around 1 million tonne per annum recycled steel capacity would require an investment of the order of INR 3,000 crore.
