Steel Scrap Leads to Significant Reduction in GHG Emissions: BDSV

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Federal Association of German Steel Recycling and Disposal Companies e. V. (BDSV) stated that the use of steel scrap as raw material in steel production results in significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Andreas Schwenter, President, BDSV noted that the scrap industry has been continuously offering high-quality recycled steel as a true resource and climate-friendly alternative. He called for legally stipulated minimum use quota of steel scrap in steel production and increased investments in future technologies. Also, manufacturing companies that increasingly use secondary raw materials including scrap steel must be offered tax incentives too, he added.

The association cited Munich-based ALFA Recycling as a role model of facilities that focuses on conservation of resources and reduced carbon emissions. The facility delivers processed scrap materials to raw material processing centres throughout Europe. An expanded rail network access could further boost the sales market to cover more geographical locations.

As per estimates, every single ton of steel scrap saves approximately 1.67 tons of emissions, whereas the emission savings per ton of stainless steel scrap comes to around 4.3 tons, BDSV noted.
