Smurfit Kappa Entered Into New Mixed Paper Processing Contract

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Kappa Recycling UK- the recycling division of the European packaging major, announced that it has reached an agreement with Lancashire Renewables to process approximately 15,000 tonnes per annum of mixed paper collected by the Council at kerbside.

The paper thus collected would be transported to Smurfit Kappa’s Blackburn depot facility. From there, it will be baled and shipped to one of the company’s paper mills in the region, to be reprocessed into new paper. The new recycling mechanism will result in additional employment opportunities in Blackburn and Lancashire.

Ian Ledson, general manager UK North for Smurfit Kappa Recycling noted that the central location of the Blackburn depot will help reduce carbon footprint. Ledson added that it is proud to offer a sustainable solution for Lancashire’s household waste paper and that it looks forward to further develop the relationship over the coming years.

According to Paul Bindle, General Manager, Lancashire Renewables, the new recycling contract with Smurfit Kappa Recycling UK is in support of its ongoing commitment to find alternative, more sustainable and environment-friendly solutions for Lancashire’s waste. The council-owned company looks forward to build on the initial contract duration to make it valid for a longer term, he added.
