SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Kappa plc. announced new project to construct a heat extraction plant at its Nettingsdorf Paper Mill in Austria. The joint venture project in association with Bioenergie Group will utilize waste heat generated at the mill, which in turn will be used to power a sustainable district heating solution for the benefit of the Ansfelden community. The construction of the plant is underway, said the company press release dated 21st October, 2021.

The project is expected to capture up to 25 megawatts of heat generated in the production process, which will get converted through the heat extraction plant. This heat will be supplied to the district heating network that serves nearly 10,000 households in Ansfelden. The new plant is likely to significantly reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of the surrounding district by up to 20,000 tonnes per annum.
Commenting on the new project, Günter Hochrathner, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Nettingsdorf said that the project is another important step forward in advancing sustainability at the mill. It captures the waste heat in the most environment friendly manner possible, by significantly reducing discharge of heat into the environment, he added.
It must be noted that Smurfit Kappa had earlier implemented a similar project at its Pitea Paper Mill.
