SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Kappa- the world’s leading paper-based packaging producer announced its decision to invest around $100 million at its Yumbo, Columbia paper mill. The investment is expected to reduce the company’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 6%.
The company plans to install a state-of-the-art biomass boiler at the paper mill, which will help in replacing fossils fuels with organic wastes to generate clean energy at the facility. The organic waste comprises of pine and eucalyptus barks, waste from wood treatment plant and bye-products such as ash and sludge. It must be noted that the company has successfully installed similar biomass boilers at its other European mills.
Once operational, the biomass boiler will result in significant reduction of fossil fuel usage and deliver notable cost savings. The boiler is expected to become operational by end-2024, said the company press release.
Commenting on the development, Alvaro J. Henao, CEO of Smurfit Kappa Colombia said that the project is a very important one for the region, not only because it would position the company to respond to rising paper demand, but also due to its contribution in expanding the use of renewable energies. The ambitious project demonstrates Smurfit Kappa’s top priority to circularity in all of its operations, Henao added.
