Smurfit Kappa Announced Strategic Investment in North Wales Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Europe’s leading corrugated packaging company Smurfit Kappa announced that its Board of Directors approved a transformational investment plan for its Mold plant in North Wales.

The €40 million investment will further expand the plant’s capacity, thus making it the largest box factory in the entire UK region. Also, the planned investment will equip the facility to meet the rising market demand for sustainable packaging products. The investment comprises installation of state-of-the-art equipment, which will reduce per tonne carbon emissions by nearly 15%.

Commenting on the investment plans, Eddie Fellows, CEO, Smurfit Kappa UK and Ireland stated that the investment in North Wales will increase the company’s capability, flexibility and speed of response to deliver innovative packaging solutions to customers across the UK and Ireland. It will bring huge benefits for the local community and the environment, he added.

As part of the investment, Smurfit Kappa plans to construct a three-acre nature trail, comprising a local stream and a new footpath which can be used by both site staff and the local community. An extra 10,000 trees, shrubs and bushes will be planted. Also, the excess soil removed will be used by the nearby heritage project.
