SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Kappa’s Vitop facility in Alessandria, Italy has become the first plant in the bag-in-box industry to be ISCC Plus certified. The prestigious certification is in recognition of Vitop’s industrial processes and standards.
Vitop tap is the company’s sustainable packaging solution for liquid and semi-liquid products. It is part of the company’s Bag-in-Box range of packaging solutions. It is known for its unique properties including its easy and convenient use, attractive and compact design added to its popularity. The combination of its tamper-proof design and high oxygen barrier contributed to extended product freshness and shelf life.

ISSC- one among the world’s largest certification systems, covers all sustainable feedstocks, including bio-based and recycled resins and plastic packaging. The receipt of the new certificate will give Smurfit Kappa the opportunity to launch pilot projects with its customers. Furthermore, it will allow the company to incorporate resins issued from chemical recycling into their taps and bags in future.
The Vitop facility uses recycled or bio-based resins to manufacture taps and bags using methods that facilitate significant reduction in plastics and carbon dioxide. The Bag-in-Box products by Smurfit Kappa were initially used for wines, but were later extended to a wide range of food products.
