Rosemount Aluminum Recycling Facility Fined for Violation of the Clean Air Act

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Spectro Alloys Corp. in Rosemount has been fined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) a sum of $110,000 for violating the Clean Air Act. The settlement agreement also requires the company to upgrade its air pollution control equipment at an investment of nearly $1 million. The above investment will lead to reduction of air emissions.

The EPA had cited several violations at the facility. It had found that the company’s furnace stack had exceeded emission limits. It had failed to provide correct sealing to vent system on scrap dryer. Also, there was no proper monitoring of lime injection at the dryer baghouse by company officials.

There have been complaints by residents living nearby the facility of a bad odour, metallic taste and a blue-green haze for several years. They had also warned of harmful health conditions due to emissions from the facility.

Luke Palen, president of Spectro Alloys noted that the company has cooperated fully with the EPA authorities to address all concerns. The new equipment will enhance automation and reduce emissions in a great manner, Palen added.

The EPA release said that it is pleased to see that Spectro Alloys is taking necessary steps to rectify the issue.
