General Iron’s Permit Application for Metal Shredder Rejected by City

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): General Iron’s plans to expand its metal shredding and recycling operations on Chicago’s Southeast Side hit a roadblock as the City rejected its application for an operating permit.

The Chicago Department of Public Health officials cited the company’s application as ‘incomplete and substantially deficient’. The letter by the authorities mentioned 34 specific requests for further information and documentation. The company has been asked to submit an entirely new application document after incorporating the requested details.

The application was submitted on November 11^th. It must be noted that the facility cannot open until it receives the permit. The administration had crafted new rules that require extensive feedback from nearby residents and additional clauses aimed at ensuring environmental protection.

The city officials have now sought details on the company’s plans to prevent explosions at the site. Further, it has asked for an explanation on the use of caustic additive in the plant’s stormwater treatment plan. In addition, it has ordered the company to submit a revised stormwater pollution prevention plan and rectify the inaccuracies in the site’s air pollution study.
