Province Reviews AIM’s Response to Scrap Metal Yard Fire Report

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The New Brunswick government officials stated that the response to the report about the fire at its Saint John scrapyard by American Iron and Metal (AIM) is currently under review. However, the province is yet to make a final decision on whether to revoke the company’s operating license.

The company was asked to submit its response to the report submitted by task force latest by 11.59 PM last Friday. The company spokesperson clarified that the response was submitted before the end of the deadline. The response is being reviewed by government officials and that there is no specific timeline for a final decision by the provincial government, he said.

The fire incident occurred in September this year. It sent plumes of toxic smoke over the city and used approximately 22 million gallons of water to extinguish. The taskforce report released in early-December noted that the scrap yard did not have a proper emergency plan in place and that it contained scrap piles exceeding the height prescribed by the National Fire Code of Canada. Also, the report noted that the city’s fire department was not equipped to fight the fire. Furthermore, the task force report warned that there is high likelihood of another fire in the future.
