Novelis will work in partnership with Alabama Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, to provide the Bay Minette project with renewable energy in order to reduce its scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. The company will participate in Alabama Power's Renewable Subscription Program to create two new 80-megawatt solar power generation plants in Alabama. These plants will supply almost 50% of the plant’s renewable energy needs, thus eliminating 192 kilotons of carbon dioxide emissions per annum.
In addition, the two companies will collaborate on advancing new technologies to reduce Novelis' Scope 1 carbon emissions.
Suzanne Lindsay-Walker, Novelis' Vice President of Sustainability stated that partnering with Southern Company and Alabama Power on renewable energy solutions will help the company meet its previously announced goals to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2026 and be carbon neutral by 2050 or sooner.
