SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Atlanta, Georgia-headquartered U.S. industrial aluminum company Novelis Inc. announced investment aimed at boosting the recycling capacity for used beverage cans (UBCs). The proposed investment of around $90 million is expected to double the UBC recycling capacity at its Latchford, UK plant.
The investment will cover construction of a new dross house and three new bag houses. Additionally, it will see installation of state-of-the-art shredding, sorting, de-coating, and melting technologies at the plant, which in turn will significantly add to operational efficiency and help the plant to recycle a larger volume and new types of aluminium scrap. The investment will result in reduction of more than 350,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year for Novelis Europe, the company press release said.
The project is expected to begin commissioning in December 2026. Upon completion of the project, the Latchford plant will have capacity to recycle 100% of UBCs to be collected under the proposed UK deposit return scheme.
Commenting on the investment, Allan Sweeney, plant manager of Novelis Latchford noted that it will strengthen the company’s position as the largest aluminum recycler in the UK market. It will make the Latchford plant capable to recycle all types of UBC scrap, Sweeney added.
