SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Atlanta-based aluminum recycler Novelis has partnered with nonprofit Habitat for Humanity to launch a new joint recycling initiative.
The initiative aims to boost recycling in local communities and donate funds for promoting affordable housing. Novelis will provide grants and bins to collect nearly 2 million aluminum cans from across the U.S. and Canada. As per rough estimates, aluminum worth over $1 billion ends up in U.S. landfills every year.
The initiative, to be launched on June 1st, 2021, will run for a period of six months. Throughout this period, a total of around 140 participating Habitat organizations across these countries will collect aluminum cans. At the end of the six-month period, the collected cans will be properly accounted for and transported to approved local recycling centres, where they will be paid based on collected weight.
It must be noted that the pilot phase of the initiative launched in November last year had collected and recycled 1 million aluminum cans in just over three months.
The registration for the program will come to an end by end-May this year.
In addition to the funds obtained in return for the collected aluminum, the Habitat organizations will receive grant of $1,750 each. In addition, the first, second and third place winners will be awarded grants of $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500, respectively, said Novelis press release.
