SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to the recent data published by the World Steel Association, the crude steel production by North American countries edged lower by 15.5% during the entire year 2020. The yearly production totalled 101.119 million tonnes (Mt) during the previous year, as against 119.683 Mt recorded in 2019.
The total crude steel production by Canada during the year was 11.078 Mt, substantially lower by 14.1% than the 2019 production of 12.897 Mt. The US produced 72.690 million tonnes (Mt) of crude steel, significantly lower by 17.2% when compared to 87.761 Mt production achieved during the year before. The total crude steel production by Mexico dropped 8.3% from 18.387 Mt to 16.854 Mt over the previous year.

The Cuban crude steel production tumbled by nearly 21.4% to 181,000 tonnes. The crude steel output by El Salvador was estimated at 79,000 tonnes in 2020, down by over 22.5% when compared with 102,000 tonnes a year before. Guatemala produced 237,000 tonnes, falling by 22.6% from a year ago.
The regional crude steel production totalled 9.107 Mt in December last year, down significantly by 7.1% from 9.801 Mt in December 2019. The leading producers were the U.S (6.434 Mt), Mexico (1.550 Mt) and Canada (1.070 Mt). All countries in the region except Mexico recorded year-on-year decline in output during the month.
