China Spurs Asian Crude Steel Output Surge in November

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): China led crude steel output surge by the Asian region during the month of November this year, says the latest crude steel production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).

The regional monthly production totalled 116.407 million tonnes (Mt) in November 2020. This compares with the production of 107.526 Mt in November last year. The Asian output recorded year-on-year surge by 8.3%. Also, the region accounted for nearly 74% of the global crude steel production during the month.

World Crude Steel Output Plummeted Through November

Chinese output surged higher by 8% over the previous year to total 87.660 Mt in November this year. It must be noted that the country had produced only 81.191 Mt in the same month a year before. The country accounted for nearly over 75% of the regional production during the month.

The second largest producer in the Asian region was India, whose output recorded 3.5% jump year-on-year to total 9.245 Mt. In third place was Japan with a production of 7.264 Mt. Japan’s output declined by 5.9% when matched with the previous year. The other primary steel producers were South Korea (5.760 Mt), Vietnam (4.098 Mt), Taiwan (1.565 Mt), Thailand (445,000 tonnes) and Pakistan (370,000 tonnes).

The combined eleven-month output by Asian countries totalled 1.240 billion tonnes, higher by 2.0% from 1.216 billion tonnes in Jan-Nov ‘19. The top three producing countries were China (961.158 Mt), India (89.393 Mt) and Japan (75.669 Mt).
