LIBERTY Steel Forged Ahead with Whyalla Steel Works Decarbonisation

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Liberty Steel has entered into strategic agreements aimed at boosting green iron and steel production at Whyalla Steel Works.

The parent company, GHG Alliance, announced that it has signed a landmark agreement with South Australian government towards supply of hydrogen from its electrolyser in Whyalla to support the company’s efforts to promote green iron and steel manufacturing. In addition, it has also signed a memorandum of understanding with energy major Santos towards long-term natural gas supply to its Whyalla steel plant.

Sanjeev Gupta, Executive Chairman, GFG Alliance noted that these steps are vital in the company’s plans to boost its production of premium green iron and steel in Whyalla. Furthermore, it is a huge boost to Australia’s commitment to lead the world in steel industry decarbonisation, he added.

Earlier, Liberty Steel had committed to establish a state-of-the-art green iron and green steel plant, powered by renewable energy and green hydrogen.

Recently, Whyalla steelworks had received a grant funding of around $63 million from the Australian government towards purchase and installation of an electric arc furnace (EAF) and another grant of $50 million for use towards the EAF. The recent agreements will bolster the transformation of Whyalla steelworks.
