Leading Metal Recycler Face Charges After Workplace Death

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading metal recycler, American Iron & Metal (AIM Recycling), has been charged following the death of a worker at its Saint John facility last summer. The incident had led to the death of Darrel Richards, aged 60 years, on 1^st July, 2022 in the hospital.

According to WorkSafeNB, the company has now been charged with four violations of the province’s Occupational Health and Safety Act. The recycler failed to take reasonable precaution to ensure the health and safety of the worker. It failed to acquaint the employee with hazard in connection with the handling and disposal of calendar roll. It failed to provide necessary information in order to ensure employee’s health and safety. Moreover, it failed to ensure that the work was competently supervised and that supervisors have sufficient knowledge.

The incident was the second workplace death in less than a year. Earlier, in late November 2021, the Saint John facility had reported death of an unidentified man.

Meantime, Herb Black, owner of AIM Recycling noted that nothing could have been done to prevent either death. He claimed that the operations at the facility were smooth and extremely safe.
