LASG Partners on New Smelter to Tackle E-Waste Crisis

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Lagos State Government (LASG) announced that it has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with a Dutch company, Closing the LOOP B.V, to establish a smelter plant in Lagos to tackle the rising menace of e-waste crisis.

The signing ceremony was recently held at Alausa, which was attended among others by Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources as well as Mr. Michel Deleen, the Consul General of Netherlands in Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, Wahab the proposed e-waste smelter could deliver significant improvement to the economy of Lagos. Besides helping to convert discarded electronic waste into new useful products, the smelter would lead to creation of several new jobs in the region. Many people lack proper awareness on how to safely dispose of their used electronic devices. Improper e-waste management could severely impact environment and human life, Wahab warned.

Meantime, Deleen assured collaboration of the Netherlands government on the project, saying that it will play a key role in turning waste into value. The partnership will immensely benefit both the parties, he noted.

As per estimates, Lagos generates around 13,000 tons of waste per day, with e-waste accounting for a significant portion. At the same time, Lagos is ahead of other Nigerian states in effective e-waste management.
