LASG Seeks Efficient Disposal of Electronic Waste

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency in collaboration with E-Waste Producer Responsibility Organisation of Nigeria, the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, the National Environmental Standards and Registration Enforcement Agency, the International Labour Organisation, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation have called for proper electronic waste management in the state.

Speaking during the celebration of 2023 E-Waste Day, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Lagos Waste Management Authority, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, drew participants’ attention to the hidden dangers of electronic waste, according to a statement on Thursday.

Gbadegesin, who was represented by Yusuf Olabanji, said there was an urgent need to address the challenges posed by discarded electronic devices which remain unseen but with grave environmental and health risks.

“By implementing sustainable recycling practices, these resources can be recovered to reduce reliance on raw materials extraction and create employment,” he said.

The Director General, NESREA, Prof. Aliu Jauro, who was represented by Mrs Omolola Adeola, said e-waste constituted an ecological threat.

 “These discarded electronic devices prevalent in households contain hazardous elements like lithium, mercury, lead and brominated flame retardants,” he said.

The General Manager, LASEPA, Dr Babatunde Ajayi, who spoke through the Director of e-waste, Mrs Adebayo Adedayo, called for a robust legal framework for legislation mandating proper e-waste handling, recycling and disposal.
