SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The abandoned Quesnel specialty products sawmill will reopen by the end of this month. The sawmill, earlier owned by C&C Wood Products, which had fell into bankruptcy last year was taken over by Williams Lake forestry company Kandola Forest Products.
Neal Kandola, president, KFP noted that the mill would rehire almost 90 workers. The returning employees include those who had held key positions at the mill before its closure. It must be noted that the mill had employed nearly 185 workers at the mill and in its logging and hauling division. The mill had reported two years of continuous losses, before it declared bankrupt in June 2020.
The Quesnel Investment Corporation had bought C&C’s entire assets. Later on, it reached an agreement with KFP on sales of its sawmill operations. Meantime, it held on to its logging business.
The media statement by the company expressed confidence in restoring the sawmill as a successful, stable, long-term employer and operator in the City of Quesnel. It plans to explore further investments at the mill, which in turn would raise the employment numbers to cross the previous peak. The company is optimistic of the rising costs of lumber, which it expects not only to stay, but to increase further during the current year.
