SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association (CMRA) has announced the first batch of certified suppliers and importers under the new scrap policy by the country’s administration.
The metal recycling body published a list of nine suppliers, who have been certified to ship copper and aluminum scrap into the country, in conformance with the new standards. In addition, CMRA has also authorized a total of 16 importers. The certified companies will find it easier to clear their cargoes at customs, said CMRA press release. It must be noted that the application window for certification will remain open until the end of this year.
The certified suppliers include U.S.-based Uni-All Group, in addition to five companies from Japan, two from Malaysia and one from Hong Kong. The certified importers are from six Chinese provinces including Guangdong and Zhejiang.
China has decided to prohibit imports of solid waste effective 2021, citing environmental reasons. However, the administration has classified very high-grade scrap metal that meets the new standard as resource, instead of waste, which in turn would not be subject to ban. The Standardization Administration of China had earlier approved imports of 13 ferrous scrap grades and two stainless grades.
