SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) announced publication of 2020 World Steel in Figures.
The report notes that the global steel industry is seen grappling with the effects of Covid-19 pandemic. It predicts notable decline in global steel demand during the initial half of the current year. However, the impact on steel demand in the medium term is likely to be less severe. The steel industry continues to remain at the core of a sustainable modern society, it said.
The world crude steel production has recorded steady increase from 1.621 billion tonnes in 2015 to 1.869 billion tonnes in 2019. China accounted for 53.3% of the total global output during the year.

The Luxembourg-based integrated steelmaker ArcelorMittal outclassed China Baowu Group as the topmost steel producing company in 2019. The output by ArcelorMittal totalled 97.31 million tonnes (Mt), whereas that of China Baowu Group was 95.47 Mt. The other leading steel producers were Nippon Steel Corporation (51.68 Mt), HBIS Group (46.56 Mt) and POSCO (43.12 Mt).
The top five steel producing countries along with tonnages are as follows: China (996.3 Mt), India (111.2 Mt), the U.S. (99.3 Mt), Russia (71.9 Mt) and South Korea (71.4 Mt).
The apparent steel use per capita of world countries averaged at 229.3 kgs in 2019. The South Korean per capita steel consumption was 1039 kgs, followed by Taiwan and Czech Republic with 759.8 kgs and 673.6 kgs respectively.
