Global Crude Steel Production Dipped 13%

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) published the monthly crude steel production data for the month of April 2020.

According to data, the crude steel output by 64 countries reporting to the Association totalled 137.098 million tonnes (Mt) during the month, down significantly by 13% when compared with the same month a year before. The production had totalled 157.672 Mt in April last year. The year-to-date production recorded a decline by 4.1% to 580.994 Mt, as compared with 605.684 Mt of production in Jan-Apr ’19. It must be noted that the global crude steel production had reported 1.4% decline in Q1 this year.

Upon comparison with the prior year, all the regions reported notable decline in steel output in April 2020. The African steel output recorded the highest decline, falling by 55.7% year-on-year, driven by 99.5% decline by South Africa. All the countries in South America except Chile reported reduced output. The region, as a whole, reported 42.8% decline in output. Meantime, North America witnessed 28.3% dip in steel output.

The EU-28 countries produced 22.9% less steel than April 2019. Other Europe region also saw its steel output fall by 28.2%. The CIS region posted 22.6% year-on-year decline in output. The Middle East and Oceania region witnessed 22% and 18.4% decline respectively. The Asian crude steel production was down by 7.5%. China- the world’s largest steel producer reported flat output.
